Affordable Housing in the Chicago Region: Perspectives and Strategies

Current State of Stable Racially and Ethnically Diverse Communities
CURL did a survey of diverse communities around the country. It was an update to the 1998 research on sustainable and stable diverse communities in the United States (The Emergence of Stable Racially and Ethnically Diverse Urban Communities: A Case Study of Neighborhoods in Nine U.S. Cities). A presentation was made at Colorlines Conference at the Kennedy School of Public Policy at Harvard University in 2003.

CURL worked with the Southwest Organizing Project (and their membership organizations), Neighborhood Housing Services (Chicago Lawn/Gage Park) and the Greater Southwest Development Corporation and examined the causes, effects, and potential solutions of home mortgage foreclosures in the Chicago Lawn and Gage Park neighborhoods.

A History of Deborah’s Place: An Organization Serving Women Who Are Homeless or Formally Homeless in Chicago
Since its founding in 1985, Deborah’s Place has provided shelter, food, resources, and support to women in Chicago who are homeless or formerly homeless. Listening to the voices of current and former participants, staff, volunteers, and board members, this report attempts to capture the essence of the relationships of those women who built or participated in Deborah’s Place.

Housing Affordability Research Committee
The committee comprised of community-based organization leaders, citywide agency representatives, and university researchers. It built an independent, rigorous research database to inform public policy in the area of housing for extremely low-income families in the Chicago area. This was a joint project of CURL and the Roosevelt University Institute for Metropolitan Affairs and was funded by the Woods Fund of Chicago.

The Uptown Housing and Land Use Study
CURL partnered with Organization of the NorthEast (ONE) and State Representative Larry McKeon to collect data on land use and housing in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood. This report is organized into three broad sections. First, a brief history of Uptown is provided to give readers a context for the setting of the study. Second, changes are examined that occurred in key demographic, housing and land use variables between 1990 and 2000. Finally, a variety of maps, graphs, and tables, to be found in the appendix, are used in presenting a more detailed picture of the community area.

In a time of major CHA restructuring, the agency will no longer provide direct social services to residents. Instead, there are plans to refer residents to neighborhood agencies for services that have traditionally been offered at CHA sites in order to determine resident need and availability to existing services beyond CHA. This study sought to examine access those services.

Chicago Housing Authority: Cabrini Hope VI Survey
This project was a participatory research evaluation with tenants at Cabrini Green to provide voice in the redevelopment of Cabrini under the Chicago Housing Authority Transformation Project (Hope VI) move to mixed income housing. Through the use of a survey of current residents, the project built a demographic profile of Cabrini households. This provided a baseline for the planning process.

Rogers Park – Community of Opportunity - Housing
CURL supported 6 community-based organizations to create a collaboration to develop and implement policies to maintain and create affordable housing in Rogers Park. This was one of the projects in a 3-yearinitiative funded by HUD’s COPC grant.
