Status of Young Women and Girls in Illinois
(2009)
The Center for Urban Research and Learning at Loyola University Chicago formed a partnership with Women and Girls’ Collective Action Network and Chicago Girls’ Coalition to conduct a secondary data analysis to determine how young women and girls are faring in Illinois. In March 2009, President Obama signed an Executive Order creating the White House Council on Women and Girls. The purpose of this Council is to ensure that American women and girls are treated fairly in all matters of public policy and to work to enhance, support and coordinate the efforts of existing programs for women and girls.
In keeping with this national goal, the Status of Girls in Illinois report asks: How are girls and young women in Illinois faring as they navigate their way through childhood and adolescence and eventually move into adulthood? The assumption framing this report is that if we can better understand the multiple needs of girls, along with strategies to meet those needs, we can inspire change so that we are all moving in the same direction.
This project aimed to provide statistical evidence that will inform on the issues, needs, and solutions required to ensure the healthy development of all young women and girls in Illinois. Through the dissemination of the final report, the findings helped shape the policies and practices implemented to enhance the quality of young women and girls’ lives.
