Youth Participatory Evaluation for Community Change Workshop

The Center for Urban Research and Learning partnered with University of Michigan's Program for Youth and Community to provide participatory evaluation research workshops to youth in the community. The two-day workshop prepared young people to employ practical participatory tools for gathering information at the community level. Through the workshop, young people developed specific skills and practical tools for program evaluation, assessments of community needs and assets, policy issue analysis, and other studies.

Needs Assessment of the Catholic Charities’ Street Interventions Program

CURL worked with Catholic Charities to provide a needs assessment of their Street Interventions (SI) program. SI identifies teens and young adults in need of alternative education, working primarily out of the Back of the Yards neighborhood. SI improves the lives of at-risk-youth by providing positive environments of structure and support.

Girl Driven Research Project

Girl World, a program within Alternatives Inc in the neighborhood of Uptown on Chicago’s North Side, provides gender specific and age appropriate programming for girls and young women ages 10 to 18. Program activities focus on increasing self-esteem and self-efficacy, encouraging teamwork and social justice awareness, and developing leaders. In partnership with CURL, Girl World designed and implemented Participatory Research asking the question “How do young African American women feel about their hair and what influences them to feel that way?” They reviewed literature, collected data through observations, interviews and photos and analyzed data. Issues of self esteem, self perception, cultural norms, racism and the creation of beauty images were all confronted as part of this project.

Creating Community Connections: A Neighborhood Approach For Improving Early Childhood Education Programs

The Early Childhood Network of Edgewater & Rogers Park (ECN) was developed to test a model for improving services through a modest commitment of resources. The model proposes that one coordinator can network diverse child care providers throughout a neighborhood and maximize their ability to acquire the knowledge and resources necessary to improve and expand their programs.

Proviso East High School Health Center

The Loyola School of Nursing was awarded over $2 million from the Health Resources Services Administration and the Illinois Dept. of Human Services to develop a school-based health center at Proviso East High School in Maywood. The center sought to provide on-site comprehensive preventive and primary health care services to underserved adolescents.

Girls Transitioning to Women: Bethany Brethren Community Center

Bethany Brethren Community Center (BBCC) is a small church-based social service agency located in East Garfield Park serving primarily children and teen girls in after-school programs. In order to re-establish Girls Transitioning to Women (GTW), BBCC conducted a needs assessment. Yolanda Moore, the coordinator of the teen girls’ program, was awarded a CURL Community Fellowship and worked closely with CURL to train the girls to conduct the survey and analyze the results.
